How to Ask Customers for Google Reviews on WhatsApp Without Breaking Google's Rules

Quick answer

Yes, you can ask customers for a Google review by link, QR code, email or WhatsApp. Google bans paying or rewarding for reviews and asking only the customers you expect to be positive. Ask every customer who bought, once, with a plain message that carries only your review link.

Note

What we read and checked. We read four Google help pages on 4 November 2026 (linked under Sources) and Article 1 of UAE Cabinet Resolution 56 of 2024. We checked how MAJ Leads behaves against the product's own code and tests the same day. MAJ Leads has no customer results on how many reviews a request produces, so this page claims none. Google can change its pages, so read the current ones before you set a process. No lawyer has reviewed the UAE paragraph.

Does Google allow you to ask customers for reviews?

Yes. Google's Tips to get more reviews page says you can ask customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code, and its page on creating a review link lists receipts, thank-you emails, the end of a chat, a printed QR code, and sending the request by email, WhatsApp or a Facebook post. A customer has to be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review.

Why bother? Google's local ranking page puts "how many reviews you have" under prominence and says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It does not say how much weight reviews carry against distance and relevance, so treat reviews as one factor and a trust signal for the person reading your profile, not as a ranking lever you can size.

What does Google ban when you ask?

Google's prohibited and restricted content policy for Maps contributions sets the limits. The practical reading for a request message:

Google's review rules and what they mean for your request
Google ruleWhat the page saysWhat it means for you
No incentivesPayment, discounts, and free goods or services in exchange for a review are not allowed. The same applies to a reward for changing or removing a review. No coupon, free coffee, prize draw or loyalty points in the message. Not even a small one.
No selective askingA business may not discourage negative reviews or selectively ask for positive ones.Do not ask only the customers you think are happy, and do not send unhappy ones somewhere else first.
No quotas or scriptsA business may not require staff to collect a set number of reviews or ask for specific content.Do not set a reviews-per-rep target, and do not write the review for the customer.
No conflicts of interestReviews from current or former employees, relatives or competitors are out.Do not ask your own team or family to post.
Replies are not adsGoogle advises against using a reply to offer deals or promotions.Thank people and answer the point they raised.

The "no selective asking" rule is the one most businesses break without noticing. A message that goes only to customers who gave a five-star rating on an internal survey is selective. Our practice is to ask every customer who bought, in the same way, and let the rating fall where it falls.

Who should you ask, and when?

Practice. Ask people who became customers, after the thing they bought has happened. For a clinic that is the visit, for a property agency the viewing or the deal, for a shop the sale. Asking on the day someone books, before the visit, asks for a review of a promise.

  • Do not ask leads who did not buy, numbers that turned out wrong, junk enquiries, or anyone who asked you to stop contacting them.
  • Ask once. A second request on a different day reads as pressure, and Google's page names no cadence that is safe.
  • Wait a little. A short delay lets a team fix a stage tapped by mistake before a customer gets a message.

Per Google's review link page, sign in to the Business Profile, choose Read reviews, then Get more reviews, and use the share icon to copy the link or save a QR code. Google says the QR code can only be made from a computer browser, not a phone. The button label can differ by profile. The page does not describe the link's format, so copy the link Google gives you instead of building one from a place ID.

What should the message say?

Keep it short, name the customer and the business, ask for a review, and carry one link. Here is a version in English and one in Arabic. Replace the words in brackets.

Hi [first name], thank you for choosing [business name]. If you have a minute, a quick Google review would mean a lot to us: [your review link]
English example
مرحباً [الاسم]، شكراً لاختيارك [اسم الشركة]. إذا توفّر لديك دقيقة، يسعدنا أن تشاركنا تقييمك على جوجل: [رابط التقييم]
Arabic example

Three things to leave out: any offer, any second link, and any hint about the rating you hope for.

How does MAJ Leads ask for reviews?

You paste your Google review link into Settings once and can save your own message with the customer's first name, your business name and the link filled in. After that, each lead that is won has a review request. What the product does today, from its code:

  • One tap from the lead. The team member taps the request on the won lead and WhatsApp opens with the message ready to send. The product marks the lead as asked, so nobody sends it twice.
  • Who counts as won. A lead whose stage is Won, or one with a completed booking. A lead at Booked counts straight away only in industries with no visit to wait for, such as retail and B2B. For property, cars, clinics, education and home services, the visit has to have happened.
  • Who is never asked. Junk and wrong-number leads, people on your do-not-contact list or who asked to stop, test and deleted leads, leads without a phone number, and leads already asked.
  • Two checks on your wording. A saved message that offers a discount, gift, voucher or similar (in English or Arabic) cannot be sent, and neither can one that carries a link other than your review link.
  • Automatic sending, if you switch it on. Leads that become won after you switch it on get the request on their own, at least four hours after they were marked won and no later than 45 days after. It goes from your connected WhatsApp Business number as a message template Meta must approve first. WhatsApp sending is rolling out, so this path depends on that. The one-tap path does not.

Some plans cap the number of review requests a month. The lead page shows that instead of the button, so nobody opens WhatsApp for nothing.

Does a review request count as marketing under UAE rules?

We do not know of a ruling on this, and no lawyer has reviewed this answer. Cabinet Resolution 56 of 2024 defines telemarketing as phone calls to a consumer to market, advertise or promote the company's products or services, and says the definition includes marketing text messages and messages on social media apps. A one-off thank-you that asks for a review and offers nothing is not an obvious sales pitch, but it is not clearly outside the definition either. The safe habits are the ones that also satisfy Google: one message, to a customer who bought, with no offer, sent in daytime. If you want certainty, ask UAE counsel.

Meta decides the category of a WhatsApp template, and its pricing depends on that category. Our posts on the 24-hour window and templates and on WhatsApp opt-in and proof cover the platform side. See how it works and pricing for the product.

Frequently asked questions

Can I offer a discount or gift for a Google review?
No. Google's policy for Maps says payment, discounts and free goods or services in exchange for a review are not allowed, and the same applies to rewards for changing or removing a review. A review request should offer nothing.
Can I ask only my happy customers for a review?
Google's policy says a business may not selectively ask for positive reviews or discourage negative ones. Ask every customer who bought, in the same way, and reply to the negative ones helpfully.
Can I send a Google review request on WhatsApp?
Yes. Google's page on creating a review link lists email, WhatsApp and a Facebook post as ways to send it. The customer needs to be signed in to a Google Account to post.
Does MAJ Leads send review requests automatically?
Yes, if you switch it on, once your WhatsApp Business number is connected and Meta has approved the message template. WhatsApp sending is rolling out. The one-tap request from a won lead works without it.
How many reviews will I get?
We cannot say. MAJ Leads has no customer results on review volume, and Google's pages give no figure. What we can say is that you cannot get any from customers you never ask.
